Praise

This company received a packaging performance level of 3 (Advanced) in its 2024 APCO Annual Report. Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) is a not-for-profit organisation leading the development of a circular economy for packaging in Australia. Each year, APCO Members are required to submit an APCO Annual Report and Action Plan, which includes an overall performance level from 1 (Getting Started) to 5 (Beyond Best Practice).

Criticism
Factory Farming
This company produces factory farmed chicken meat. Broiler chickens can legally be confined at a density that gives each bird less space than an single A4 sheet of paper. Every year in Australia 550 million chickens endure short and unnatural lives inside factory farms. This approach is fundamentally at odds with chicken welfare.
Information
Misleading advertising
In Jan 2012 Turi Foods was ordered to pay a $100,000 fine by the Federal Court for engaging in deceptive and misleading conduct by using the term 'free-to-roam' in its chicken advertising. The company was also ordered to remove the ad from shops, and publish an ad admitting liability in a Melbourne newspaper.
Processed chemical free
Most Australian processors use chlorinated iced water to sanitise and cool down chicken carcasses (same as in the US) rather than the air chilling method which is used in Europe. The water has to be chlorinated (at similar levels to a swimming pool) to ensure bacteria are killed. La Ionica promotes its chicken as chemical free as they use the air chilling method. It should be noted that some other parts of this process use Melbourne water which does contain small amounts of chlorine (0.5 ppm). FREPA accreditation
Turi Foods' Bannockburn free range chicken is certified by Free Range Egg and Poultry Australia (FREPA). However this only represents a small percentage of this company's total chicken meat production.
Farm Transparency Project profile
The Farm Transparency Project Repository is a public repository/gallery for videos, photos, documents and campaign materials relating to the animal rights movement in Australia. Follow the link to see their profile on this company.
No tax paid in 2019-20
According to data released by the Australian Tax Office in Jan 2022, this company was one of many local and foreign-based companies that paid no tax in Australia in 2019-20. Please note however that companies pay income tax on profits, not revenue (total income). While some companies use tax havens and loopholes to avoid paying their fair share of tax in Australia, other companies that paid no tax have perfectly legitimate reasons.
