Founded in 1853. Dimmeys has more than 40 stores across Australia. Collapsed into administration in 2014 after copping a $3 million fine for selling unsafe goods, and was then acquired by start-up Cool Breeze Clothing. In November 2019 Dimmeys announced that it would be closing down, after 166 years of operation.

Fined over product safety
In 2013 Dimmeys was fined $3 million and banned from selling dozens of household items for six years after breaching product safety laws. Consumer Affairs alleged Dimmeys breached Australian consumer law by selling four items, including bath toys, children's swimwear, cosmetics and basketball rings, that were hazardous or did not come with compliant warning labels.

In 2011 Dimmeys was fined $400,000 for supplying children's dressing gowns which failed to comply with the mandatory consumer product safety standard for children's nightwear. The court case was instituted by the ACCC. Dimmeys was also fined $160,000 in 2001 and $60,000 in 1999 for selling unsafe products. In 2013 Dimmeys faces more fines of up to $1.1 million per offence for again selling unsafe goods. [Listed under Information due to age of court finding]
