Hat makers
Founded in Tasmania in 1874 by Benjamin Dunkerley. In 1904 Stephen Keir I, who had also migrated from England, joined Dunkerley. Use of farmed rabbit skin
Akubra use two to three million rabbit skins every year to make their hats, each of which is made from 10 to 14 rabbit skins. They used a mix of local and imported rabbit skins until 2015, when the company dropped its local suppliers and started sourcing all of its rabbit fur from factory farms in Europe. The hats are still Australian made.
