Founded in Germany in 1887 by Adolf Muller. In 2002 Varta sold its consumer batteries division to Spectrum Brands, who sold it to Energizer in 2019. To comply with European anti-trust regulations, Energizer sold Varta back to Varta AG later in 2019.
