Criticism
PFAS pollution in USA
A 2021 report by Toxic-Free Future traces the path of American PFAS in food packaging back to one manufacturing company: Daikin America, which manufactures in Decatur, Alabama. In 2019, Daikin's Decatur PFAS manufacturing plants reported releasing 240,584 pounds of a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting chemical, HCFC-22. These emissions make them the nation's #2 polluter of HCFC-22, and in greenhouse gas terms, equate to emissions from driving 125,000 passenger cars for a year. Daikin's process for making PFAS also threatens workers' lives: at least three workers have been killed on the job in Decatur. The drinking water for communities downstream of Daikin's facilities has been contaminated by Daikin and another facility, with Daikin paying US$5 million to the local water utility to address the contamination. And when paper mills apply Daikin's PFAS treatment to paper, they can release PFAS in wastewater, contaminating rivers and sludge.
Information
Workers strike in India
In January 2019 in India 30 Daikin workers were injured in a clash with police and 'bouncers' during a strike. The rally was part of the all-India general strike called by several unions. An agitation by the worker's union of the Daikin factory in Neemrana on the 8th of January, followed by police allegedly stopping them from unfurling the flag of the worker's union outside factory premises, led to a scuffle that left around 30 workers with serious injuries. Workers said that along with police, bouncers hired by the Daikin management pelted stones and fired rubber-tipped pellets on them. According to labor rights activists, there are no registered unions in the Neemrana industrial area, which is a major cause of worker exploitation. Workers at Daikin had to fight for five years before the Rajasthan high court intervened and allowed the union to be formed on September 29, 2018.
